Marseille-based CMA CGM has signed a term sheet to acquire a 20% stake in the Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg. The liner major is already a customer at the terminal through its French Asia Line (FAL) service connecting northern Europe with ports in Asia using 23,000-TEU container ships running on LNG.

Described as a ‘strategic investment’, the acquisition is in line with the French company’s business model of infrastructure expansion, particularly in Europe. Eurogate has a direct rail link with Eurokombi, Germany’s largest intermodal terminal.

The Eurogate stake will engage the company in the Western Extension project which will add about 38 hectares of space and create around 1,050m of new quay wall. This is expected to boost terminal capacity by 50% – from about four million TEU to almost six million. The development is expected to strengthen Hamburg’s position as a north European hub.

CMA CGM chairman and CEO, Rodolphe Saadé, commented: “I am pleased to announce this new partnership with Eurogate, which marks an important step in the development of Hamburg Port and supports its ambition to remain a major gateway for European trade. Through our participation, we will help enhance the terminal’s capacity, strengthen its rail connections, and support its move towards more sustainable operations. This reflects our confidence in Germany’s long-term competitiveness and our commitment to contributing to resilient and efficient supply chains in Europe.”

The transaction is likely to be finalised in the first half of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

CMA CGM has interests in 64 terminals around the globe.
