The order is worth about 21 million euros. The vessels will be 30m long. 9.5m wide and have a maximum 1.48m draught. Speed will be 13 kilometres an hour. Load capacity will be 45 tonnes. The environmentally friendly vessels will replace ferries built in 1952 and 1953. They will have hybrid dieselelectric/battery propulsion which will reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The batteries will be charged by a diesel generator on board and also by onshore charging stations. The first vessel will be delivered in 2020. German authorities have medium- and long-term plans to modernise all the ferries used on the Kiel Canal, where 12 ferries of 45 tonnes, two of 100 tonnes and two reserve vessels of 45 tonnes are operated.
