Fincantieri-controlled shipbuilder, Vard, has won a contract to design and build a service operation vessel (SOV) for Taiwanese shipping company Ta San Shang Marine, a joint venture between the country’s Ta Tong Marine Group (TTM) and Japan’s MOL. The vessel, to be built at Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam, will be deployed on a 15-year charter to Danish energy company Ørsted at the Greater Changhua offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

The Vard 4 19 design, developed in collaboration with the project partners, will be built in accordance with Taiwanese flag and class requirements. The 84.4m-long vessel will have diesel-electric propulsion combined with a SeaQ energy storage system supplied by Vard Electro. The Vard subsidiary will also provide a SeaQ energy storage management system, a power management system and an integrated automation system.

The vessel will have accommodation for 87 persons in single cabins who will benefit from a height adjustable, motion compensated gangway with elevator. Other features of the SOV include a height adjustable boat transfer system and a 3D-compensated crane for cargo transfer.

The vessel is due for delivery in the first half of 2022.
