Opening of depressurised wave basin

Following a maritime tradition, the new DWB was christened

MARIN’s (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) depressurised wave basin (DWB) was recently officially inaugurated by Maxime Verhagen, the Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation.

The depressurised wave basin is said to be a unique research facility for testing ships and offshore structures in the most realistic operational conditions. The basin is fitted with wave generators and the air pressure in the entire basin can be decreased to as low as 2.5% of the atmospheric pressure.
The basin dimensions are 240 x 18 x 8m. The preparation harbour is 26m long and 4.2m wide. Up to 100 measurement channels can be acquired up to 100 kHz. A hydrophone array of two is fitted to the DWB, either fixed or moving along with the carriage, with a measurement range from 30 Hz to 100 kHz and sensitivity of -186 dB (at 1m distance).
