Utrecht-based Mammoet has supported the construction of Europe’s first large-scale green hydrogen plant, Holland Hydrogen 1, under development by energy major, Shell, on the Tweede Maasvlakte in the Port of Rotterdam.
The facility, due on stream at the end of this year, will have electrolyser units with a total capacity of 60 tonnes of hydrogen per day, drawing power from the Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm.
Mammoet has been involved from an early stage, providing consultancy on the construction of the plant from the front end engineering and design phase.
An early study enabled the team to determine the best routes and equipment to transport the heaviest items to the site, many of them arriving by sea. The Euromax Terminal in Rotterdam was selected as the receiving port.
The facility is part of extensive expansion at the Port of Rotterdam, including a range of hydrogen-related projects. They include a second green hydrogen plant, a production and storage facility for sustainable aviation fuel, an ammonia bunkering facility, and carbon dioxide handling facilities prior to its transport and storage under the North Sea.
