Norway’s Kongsberg has signed a deal for the first of its latest HUGIN® Superior autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV), capable of working at depths of up to 6,000m. The contract covers not only the AUV itself but also its supply to an unnamed customer in DNV GL-certified offshore containers, plus a portable version of the company’s HiPAP 502 acoustic positioning system.

The HUGIN Superior has a range of enhanced features compared with earlier models. These include a new HISAS 1032 dual-receiver interferometric synthetic aperture sonar which doubles area coverage and provides high resolution imagery and bathymetry data. The AUV system also incorporates an industry-standard multibeam echosounder and the latest sensors for sub-bottom profiling, optical imaging, laser profiling, magnetic sensing and water turbidity sensing.

The latest AUV has been developed in close collaboration with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment with the aim of being the most advanced and capable unit that is commercially available.
