Diesel-electric gensets for offshore vessels

The engine manufacturer MAN Diesel&Turbo SE announced it will equip a series of platform supply vessels (PSV) with diesel-electric gensets.

All vessels were recently ordered by Swire Pacific Offshore Operations (Pte) Limited. The newbuilding programme comprises eight type IMT-997 PSVs, with four to be built by Universal Shipbuilding Corporation in Japan and a further four to be built by EISA Shipyard in Brazil. The 97m-long, 5,000 dwt newbuildings will be equipped with four 6L27/38 MAN gensets, each unit rated at 1,980 kW at 720 rpm. The PSVs will be provided with DP2 (dynamic positioning) capability and they will have diesel-electric propulsion systems with azimuth propulsion units. According to MAN, the gensets will be constructed by the company´s Korean licensee, Doosan Engine Co. Ltd, with a delivery to the yard due from early 2013 through middle of 2014.
