Boxed ballast water system deployed in floating wind farm

French ballast water treatment system manufacturer, BIO-UV Group, has completed the first commercial deployment of its containerised Bio-Sea ballast water treatment system (BWTS) in support of the first floating offshore wind farm in the French Mediterranean Sea.
The BWTS has been commissioned at Port-la-Nouvelle in southern France and has treated three floating wind turbine platforms from the Eoliennes Flottantes du Golfe du Lion (EFGL) wind farm, which is jointly owned by Ocean Winds and Banque des Territoires. The BIO-UV system treated the ballast water of the three floating wind turbine platforms in compliance with IMO D-2 standards and local environmental regulations.
The 20-foot containerised Bio-Sea unit consists of a mobile modular system for treating ballast water during the construction and operation of floating wind platforms. The plant can be positioned ashore to treat water from platform tanks before discharge back into the sea. All treated effluent is handled locally to avoid the spread of invasive species.
BIO-UV Group Solutions Business Unit Director, Maxime Dedeurwaerder, said: “This project is an important milestone for BIO-UV Group. It is the first time our containerised ballast water treatment technology has been deployed commercially in support of the offshore renewable energy sector, demonstrating not only the performance and reliability of our UV-based solution but also its versatility in new marine applications beyond conventional shipboard use.”
The EFGL wind farm has three 10-MW turbines sited of the French Mediterranean coast. It is the first floating wind farm in the Occitanie Region.
