A Sovcomflot tanker, Gagarin Prospect, the first in a series of ‘Green Funnel’ 114,000-dwt Aframax tankers designed to operate on LNG as a primary fuel, was awarded the Next Generation Ship Award last week at Nor-Shipping. Together with other vessels in the ‘Green Funnel’ series, the tanker will operate primarily in the Baltic and North Seas where shipping volumes are high and air quality a growing concern.
Sergey Frank, Sovcomflot’s president and CEO, received the award from Norway’s Minster of Trade and Industry, Torbjørn Røe Isaksen, in the presence of His Majesty King Harald V of Norway.
Commenting on the accolade, he said: “It is a big honour to receive this trophy. We are grateful to Nor-Shipping for this recognition of our ‘Green Funnel’ initiative. Today, the shipping industry steadily transforms itself to become increasingly more sustainable, and we are proud that Sovcomflot is amongst those who lead the process. We firmly believe that adopting LNG as a primary fuel for large-capacity tankers is the right move.”
