Team Malizia, a professional sailing team led by German skipper Boris Herrmann and supported by several leading transport companies, has become the first offshore sailing team to join the International Windship Association (IWSA).

IWSA promotes wind propulsion technologies in commercial shipping at a time when many owners and operators are considering the benefits of wind power to save fuel and cut emissions.

Herrmann’s sailing team is competing in the Ocean Race 2022-23 in which contestants are currently racing on the leg between Cabo Verde and Cape Town. The team is supported by transport majors including Hapag-Lloyd, MSC and Kuehne+Nagel.

Herrmann is sitting out of this leg with an injured foot but he met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on January 23th. Guterres was attending the Ocean Summit in Cabo Verde, arranged by the Ocean Race.

Commenting on the scope for wind power in merchant shipping, Herrmann said: “Our commitment is to prosper innovation and decarbonisation in commercial maritime transport. Through our membership of IWSA, we are marking a new milestone in our climate and ocean campaign. We want to bring in our expertise from offshore racing and engage in concrete upcoming wind propulsion projects.”

Gavin Allwright, IWSA Secretary-General, commented: “We warmly welcome Team Malizia into our Association. It is indeed an exotic landmark in the history of our Association to have a professional sailing team in our membership.

“Team Malizia’s experience in frontrunning sailing technologies, their strong engagement around the world to help fight the climate crisis and their large network, including the global shipping industry, will definitely be a great asset for the entire wind propulsion community. We are looking forward to this ‘fresh breeze’ coming from this engagement,” he added.
