Schottel upgrades and expands in Singapore

Schottel Far East, regional headquarters for the German marine propulsion company, has moved to new premises in southwestern Singapore, immediately adjacent to the island nation’s shipyard cluster.

The company has invested in a new and spacious facility equipped for commissioning, maintaining and repairing propulsion systems together with a storage area for spare parts. The workshop is equipped with two 40-tonne cranes that can lift loads up to nine metres in height as well as a smaller crane with a lifting capacity of 6.3 tonnes.
“This enables us to service and overhaul Rudderpropellers up to approximately 3,500 kW in a professional environment,” said Joachim Schein, managing director of Schottel Far East Pte Ltd in Singapore. The company’s customers across the region include port authorities in Singapore and Indonesia which choose Schottel equipment for tugs and workboats. Across these two sectors, Schottel has sold around 2,200 propulsors.
“Developments in the tug sector are exciting,” said Schein, noting that tightening environmental regulations in China and Australia are providing a boost for hybrid technology. “China is the market leader for electric drives, and diesel electric hybrid propulsion is gaining significant traction in the Far East,” he commented.
Schottel Far East covers about 20 countries.
