Rotterdam-based Boluda Towage has boosted its capacity in northern Europe with the acquisition of Finnish harbour towage and icebreaker firm, Yxpila Hinaus-Bogsering (YHB). The Finnish company’s six-ship fleet includes five icebreakers capable of operating in extreme weather conditions. Efficient and safe ship manoeuvring in ice requires both ice-class vessels and expert crews.

The acquisition will enable Boluda to expand services in Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea. The company will now be able to service clients with ships operating in the northern Baltic and the Gulf of Bothnia where waters are ice-bound during winter months. The company will now be offering services in the ports of Kokkola, Vaasa, Raaha, and Kemi.

Port capacity in Kokkola has expanded rapidly over the last decade. It is now one of Finland’s largest logistics hubs and handles traffic for the mining industry, bulk cargoes, chemicals consignments, and lumber.

Boluda president, Vicente Boluda Fos, commented: “This purchase is a further step in our consolidation in northern Europe, a complex market where the experience and expertise of the crews are key to carry out towing and marine salvage operations in extreme conditions. In addition, we are opening the Scandinavian market, providing coverage to our customers in the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea.”

The Boluda group has operations in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America.
