Technology company Wärtsilä is to work with the Finnish Border Guard on tests using bioLNG as fuel for a patrol vessel. State-owned biogas refiner, Gasum, will supply bioLNG for the 96m-long Turva, built in 2014 by STX Finland Rauma Shipyard.

The patrol vessel, with two Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines, has been supported by a company maintenance agreement since delivery. After a detailed fuel specification was provided by Gasum, the Finnish Border Guard gave the go-ahead for the testing programme.

Commander Mark Aheristo of the Border Guard commented: “The strategy for the Border Guard’s fleet of patrol vessels is to switch to environmentally sustainable fuels wherever possible. Testing the bioLNG in the Turva is an important step forward in fulfilling this strategy.”
