Raytheon Technologies’ Kiel-based subsidiary, Raytheon Anschütz, has launched an electronic logbook, eLog, to simplify data management aboard ship, remove the risk of human error, and make tamper-proof information available on the cloud.

The eLog features automatic data entry at defined intervals from automatic identification systems (AIS) or integrated navigation systems (INS), but also allows data input by crew members using laptop or mobile devices. The system, which uses blockchain technology, provides secure, high-quality logbook data and is a significant step towards paperless shipping and improved shipboard processes, the company said.

“Incomplete, incorrect or illegible logbooks are a thing of the past,” declared Björn Schröder, product manager. “We’ve innovated eLog to offer transparent and reliable documentation based on the actual sensor data and plausibility checks. “Taking traditional logbook data and making it digitally usable is often difficult and inefficient, or even impossible,” he continued. “With the eLog, customers can access the data in real time through a generic, modern web interface from anywhere in the world. And it’s secure because they can’t alter data.”

The first eLog version covers the deck logbook, the bell book and the noon report. Additional functionality, with more digital reports, is under development. The system is available at a low setup cost and then on an annual subscription basis. The system has already been recognised as the full equivalent of a traditional logbook by several international flag states, including Germany.
