Havyard to develop zero-emission hydrogen technology

An unnamed European entity has enlisted Havyard’s expertise in hydrogen-based zero-emission technology to develop what is described as “a brand new concept for transporting cargo between European ports”. The European company was introduced to Havyard by Invest in Norway, the country’s business promotion agency, which has been working with the European entity for two years.

Havyard’s vice president, Sales, Lars Conradi Andersen, commented: “The framework for this contract is to develop a ship that uses hydrogen-based fuel as its primary energy source while at the same time giving the client an effective and safe ship. The goal is to design a large ship that can sail longer distances with zero emissions. Havyard is the ideal partner in this regard since our research and development work in the area of both hydrogen and simulation-driven ship design has given us unique cross-cutting expertise in how to design ships with low environmental impact.”

Kristian Osnes, executive vice president Havyard Hydrogen, established recently to focus on zero-emission technology development in shipping, added: “This is precisely the type of project that we need to expand the portfolio of zero-emission solutions into new ship segments. This shows that we have the expertise and solutions needed in tomorrow’s shipping industry.”

The European entity has also expressed interest in the development by Havyard Ocean LAB of a digital twin of the ship and its deployment on a ‘virtual ocean’. This would allow hundreds of experiments to be conducted in the quest for the optimum size of vessel, as well as other variables. Ultimately, a digital copy of both ship and route would be developed, including weather conditions and other relevant factors. Then, in digital operation prior to building the vessel, all relevant parameters would be optimised before construction begins.
