Havyard sets up new company to promote hydrogen power

Havyard Group has established a new company, Havyard Hydrogen AS, to take the next steps in the development of hydrogen as a fuel for ships. With a particular focus on hydrogen power for large ships sailing long distances, the company expects to have its first system ready for approval in principle next year.

The new company will be a system integrator, providing complete hydrogen power systems for ships together with partners and subcontractors. “In cooperation with other companies in the Group, we can also deliver ship designs and complete control and energy systems, from bridge to propeller,” the company said.

Havyard Hydrogen will be headed by Kristian Osnes from the R&D department. The company had accumulated a lot of know-how on hydrogen, he said, and unlike research undertaken by others, had focused on hydrogen power for larger vessels.

“We can now offer a system with 3.2-MW fuel cells,” Osnes said. “This will make it possible for large vessels to sail with zero emissions over longer distances. At the same time, the system is scalable and can be used by both large and small vessels.”

R&D initiatives undertaken by the company recently include the Pilot-E project, part funded by the Norwegian Government, in which a zero-carbon RoPax design was developed for operation on the Norwegian coast, powered by batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.
