Hapag-Lloyd enters port optimisation partnership

German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd has entered a partnership with Intelligent Cargo Systems (ICS) to use its CargoMate port optimisation platform. The move reflects a priority amongst carriers to iron out some of the variables in port-related operations ultimately to save fuel and raise efficiency.

By reducing time in port, there is more leeway during a voyage to reduce speed, ICS explained. Using real-time estimations and advanced notifications, CargoMate provides the potential for ships to sail sooner, keeping them on schedule and reducing idle time in port. The new platform will enable Hapag-Lloyd crews to monitor port operations more closely, capturing new data to improve vessel performance and potentially cutting fuel consumption and reducing emissions.

Jörn Springer, senior director Network Operations at Hapag-Lloyd, explained: “By having a real-time view of every port call on the CargoMate platform, we’re able to observe port calls in greater detail without requesting progress updates from the terminal or local agent. It has uncovered new costs savings and will continue our drive to improve performance and visibility for our customers.”

ICS also offers a CargoMate Mobile service to track the remaining container moves during loading and discharging and to predict whether cargo operations are running on time on a particular ship, wherever it may be in the world. The mobile device shows the position of gantries, hatch covers, gearboxes and special cargo including dangerous goods and out-of-gauge consignments, the company said.
