EU grant for global alliance on smart port logistics

Rotterdam is to lead an international alliance of 45 companies, knowledge institutes, and ports, in the pursuit of sustainable and smart logistics in port operations. The consortium has already been awarded about EUR 25 million in funding from the European Union and plans ten pilot projects that will focus on sustainable and smart port logistics.

The transition to new fuels will be a priority, the partners said. Some new fuels have already been tested on ships, in ports, and on routes to and from hinterland destinations. However, the consortium’s broad international research programme will focus on new fuels and energy carriers that have not yet been tested. This will include production, transport, storage, distribution fuels, and charging systems for electricity generation.

The partners also plan to design and implement digitalisation and automation systems for the energy transition. They will explore how to promote the concept of sustainable logistics. And an end objective is to develop a master plan that sets out how transport to, from, and within ports can be made carbon-free by 2050 and what needs to be done by 2030 and 2040 to achieve this.
