Anti-roll tool to cut risk of container loss

Weather intelligence specialist StormGeo and classification society DNV have launched a new tool to limit the risk of synchronous or parametric roll on container ships. The phenomenon is difficult to predict or control and can result in containers lost overboard.

The partners have integrated DNV’s Anti-Roll Assist application into StormGeo’s digital platform, s-Planner. The initiative will provide advance warnings to masters and navigators, highlighting the risk of heavy rolling before it becomes a threat. The DNV app provides visualised guidance both on ship and shore.

The latest addition to s-Planner enables masters to enter ship speed, loading condition such as draught and metacentric height, and obtain predictions for ‘lashing loads’ – transverse accelerations – that are likely to be encountered on the planned voyage. The scale of the risk is based on forecasted weather data.

StormGeo’s Dennis Thielsen, vice president of Planning and Navigation, said: “We are happy to partner with DNV to offer seakeeping services and anti-roll assistance to shipping companies worldwide. Helping to increase vessel safety and avoid cargo loss will not only improve shipping operations but also avoid harming our ocean wildlife.”
