Inmarsat and Samsung Heavy plan smart app during vessel construction

This means that Inmarsat-approved terminal hardware and a range of applications managing remote diagnostics, CCTV, ship performance and crew welfare, for example, will be available from the day that ship operators take delivery of their new vessels.
The new service, dubbed “Smart Ship” by SHI, will make use of Inmarsat’s dedicated bandwidth for certified application providers. Subject to a definitive agreement, smart ships delivered by SHI in the future will come with full connectivity provided by Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress and through this service, the shipbuilder will maintain remote connections with the vessels when they are in service.
“The Fleet Xpress service allows SHI to build in new levels of vessel efficiency,” declared Ronald Spithout, Inmarsat Maritime’s president. “This agreement demonstrates that the most forward-looking shipbuilders recognise collaboration as the key to shipping’s exploitation of the Internet of Things.”
Launched in April last year, Fleet Xpress has already attracted more than 10,000 committed ships of which over 2,000 are now connected. New connections are running at about 250 vessels per month.

Inmarsat and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding which envisages creation of fully connected ships during the construction process.
