Converted container ship takes on first LNG bunkers

The Wes Amelie is the first container ship that has been converted to run on LNG

The 1,000-TEU Wes Amelie, owned by Wessels Reederei, had its engine conversion carried out at German Dry Docks in Bremerhaven in a project supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. It is the first in what is likely to be a series of similar engine conversions on the Wes Amelie’s 15 sister vessels.
The first LNG bunkering procedure was overseen by LNG experts from Hamburg-based Nauticor. Four trucks brought LNG to Bremerhaven’s Kühlhauskai to fuel the Wes Amelie.
“Due to the smooth cooperation between the ship’s crew, the Bremen ports team, and our experienced specialists, the initial bunkering was a complete success,” declared Sonja Nesshöver, director of the LNG Portfolio at Nauticor. Meanwhile, the company’s managing director, Mahinde Abeynaike, described Wessels Reederei as a pioneer in establishing LNG as fuel for container ships, commenting: “We are happy to support that effort and are looking forward to future cooperation, taking into consideration that our second LNG bunker vessel will start operations in north west Europe next year with a focus on customers in North Sea and Baltic Sea.”

The world’s first container ship to be converted to run on LNG has been successfully fuelled with gas and is now operating on feeder routes between the North and Baltic Seas.
